Since
1824 volunteer crews of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution
have been risking thier lives to go to the rescue of those in
distress at sea. In that time more than 135,00 people have been
saved off the coasts of the Republic & the UK.
The lifeboat service is funded entirely by voluntary contributions
and legacies, only receiving an annual donation of 127,000 Euro
from the Irish Government. In 2002 it will cost around 5 million
Euro to run the lifeboat service on the island of Ireland, not
including the cost of new lifeboats or stations.
Each year about 800 people are rescued by Irish lifeboat crews
who are always ready to exchange warm comforts of home for the
cold, wet and danger of the water. Lifeboat crews are on call
24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
There are 50 lifeboats at 40 Lifeboat Stations around the coastline
of Ireland on one inland station on Lough Erne.
You can help the RNLI by becoming a member or joining a fundraising
branch.
